Funeral Service Associate
Position Description

This Position Description has been written to provide you with direction as to what is expected when serving as a Funeral Service Associate. While this document is not intended to be all inclusive of the tasks required of you, it does provide you with critical guidance in the successful performance of your position duties.  It is important that you read this position description carefully and bring any questions you may have about its contents to the attention of a company leader.. 

As you will see, the position description covers four key areas of your position; Core Competencies, Job Responsibilities, Job Requirements and Physical Requirements. 

 

1)  Core Competencies – The ideal Geib Funeral Home Funeral Service Associate should excel in three primary areas of competence:

  1. A)     Customer Focus

Ideal Geib Funeral Home Funeral Associates have a high level of customer focus and a high level of dedication to “going the extra mile” to serve our families and all Geib Funeral Home customers.  For any associate, outstanding service is a passion and they inspire and challenge others to the same passion.  They treat 100% customer satisfaction as a personal goal and accept no excuses for not achieving that goal.  Regarding Customer Focus you should:

 

      1. Be organized in regards to preparing for and attending to funeral services
      2. Be pleasant and positive with all members of the public
      3. Actively seek and use customer information; communicate customer needs to others in the organization.
      4. Send, receive and interpret information clearly and with sensitivity to diversity within audiences
      5. Interact effectively at different levels and with different audiences
      6. Display empathy to families; show continual care and concern to families/clients
      7. Promptly and appropriately greet all visitors, families and guests
      8. Have an eye for detail and correct problems once properly identified
      9. Possess and display an understanding of the funeral profession
      10. Display good telephone skills and etiquette using good judgment and compassion
      11. Have a geographical knowledge of area to direct visitors or callers
      12. Maintain good public relations with all who come in contact with the Geib Family & Staff
  1. B)     Teamwork and Communication

Ideal Geib Funeral Home Funeral Associates have a strong personal ethic about how to treat others, especially fellow employees.  They are able to understand and connect with others both one-to-one and in groups.  They are dedicated to teamwork and contribute to understanding and effective communication by clearly communicating with others.  They are helpful toward and supportive of other staff and consistently show a cooperative attitude.  Regarding Teamwork and Communication, a staff associate should:

 

      1. Work cooperatively with individuals on all levels within and across organizational lines
      2. Ask questions to clarify expectations and resolve issues
      3. Effectively integrate personal skills with those of others in accomplishing organizational goals
      4. Actively suggest helpful solutions to problems of all kinds: procedures, services, relationships, etc.

  1. C)    Operational Ability

Ideal Geib Funeral Home Funeral Associates ensure that their responsibilities are carried out with such attention to detail that everything is right, in every way, every time.  They are effective at achieving high quality and high result.  Regarding Operational Ability you should:

 

      1. Effectively handle a variety of assignments by being well organized, detail-oriented and able to focus on appropriate priorities first
      2. Understand the purpose of the position, carry out key responsibilities and achieve results with minimal assistance
      3. Display effective time management skills
      4. Manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines; complete tasks in a prompt, timely manner
      5. Display initiative and readiness to act on opportunities
      6. Maintain high standards of honesty, confidence and integrity
      7. Maintain confidentiality in all things pertaining to families or visitors
      8. Practice impeccable grooming and dress, with a neat and professional appearance
      9. Demonstrate attention to expense control

 

2)  Position Responsibilities

      1. Support and assist fellow employees to ensure the highest quality, most professional, and impeccable service
      2. Be knowledgeable of all programs services and amenities offered by the funeral home
      3. Use appropriate communication skills with family members, visitors, clergy, etc.
      4. Ensure visitors are properly greeted and introduced to appropriate staff during visitations
      5. Remain visible and available at all times during services and visitations
      6. When greeting visitors, determine the purpose of the visit, and respond accordingly; direct visitors to the appropriate room, personally escorting visitors to the room as time and circumstances allow
      7. Check on client family members during visitation to ensure all are satisfied
      8. Maintain the register book, prayer cards, and flower card envelopes for each service/visitation
      9. Participate in the direction and/or delivery of ceremonies and services as needed
      10. Stand attentively, at vehicle or at gravesite as directed; maintain silent, respectful attitude during all services
      11. Proactively provide directions to visitors; both inside and outside of the Funeral Home
      12. Monitor parking lot activities; during services, determine whether the vehicle is parking or traveling in the funeral procession, and if so, provide the driver a instructions relative to traveling in a funeral procession. Once the ceremony has completed, personally inspect every vehicle in the procession lineup to ensure that the vehicle has its high-beam “bright lights” on according to Ohio Revised Code, and then release each row of vehicles to the front of the building where another Geib traffic guide will waive the vehicle into traffic
      13. Pledge that complete silence and confidentiality is maintained perpetually relative to any information, circumstances, or facts concerning any deceased or client family.
      1. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of your capacity.

 

3)  Position Requirements

      1. Ability to read and write clearly
      2. Demonstrate strong verbal communication skills and good written communication skills
      3. Ability to speak effectively with customers and employees of the company
      4. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, involved instructions; to deal with problems having several concrete variables in or from standardized situation.

 

4)  Physical Requirements

      1. Ability to stand for extended periods of time
      2. Ability to communicate by means of the spoken word both face to face and over the telephone and two-way radio
      3. Ability to perceive depth and field of vision

 

Compensation

An Hourly Rate pay rate for this position has been established at $8.53 per hour, which is reconciled a bi-weekly pay period basis.
